WINTER SHUTDOWN Instructions for turning system off for winter
There is not a “set date” to turn sprinklers off.. If there is a chance of freezing…Shut it down.. Better safe than sorry Very Important to shut sprinklers down if there is any chance of freezing… In the spring it is very tempting to turn sprinklers on too early. We have a couple good days, and then another freeze sets in. It only takes a few hours for your backflow to freeze if the temperature drops. Friendly reminder, there is no warranty on damage to sprinklers due to freezing conditions.
Winter :
1. Turn off water at stop and waste ( “T shaped key with “U” end) This turns off the water supply to the irrigation system You will hear water running for a short time. Leave off until spring start up.
2. Open test cocks on backflow valve. There are typically (4) test cocks on the backflow. Turn each ¼ turn Use slotted–standard screwdriver Turn handles ½ on ½ off If possible remove backflow body If you have further questions or for more instruction, Follow all manufacturers instructions (go to Wilkens link on our website) Leave off until spring 3. Turn controller to Off.
4. If you have a drip system, open the end of the line and drain water, close after draining.
Spring: 1. Close test cocks on backflow by turning ¼ turn. 2. Make sure all valves are closed to avoid flooding 3. Turn on stop and waste ( “T shaped key with “U” end) 4. Turn on program controller 5. Run through each zone or station and check for proper operation.

Turn off irrigation systems water. Open drain valve. Remove filter cap. Remove filter element. Turn any ball valve ¼ turn and leave open Turn sprinkler controller to off.

Backflow

General
Using forced air to blow remaining water helps. Placing insulation in boxes helps. Open all faucets and manual valves and leave open Remove all drip filter caps and elements Remove any drinking faucet fixtures.
